My tattoo tut!
Filters needed: Lucis and Soft Mood XL
Step 1:
Normally I go through my image and soften the skin after duplicating the layer. I do this first because it tends to look better if/when I use Lucis for that particular AV, and also sometimes when trying to find a good color tone for the skin it can look slightly different if the av is not smooth.
For settings with the soften tool, I use 0 hardness, 100 opacity, 25 step 100 density. If it looks weird then I can lower the opacity of the layer itself and it usually looks normal then, or if I accidentally erase an important crease or line I can erase over top of it. I ONLY SMOOTH THE SKIN AROUND THE TATTOO AND NOT OVER THE TATTOO ITSELF. Get as close to the edges of the tattoo as possible without smoothing any parts of the tat.
Step 2:
Merge layers and duplicate again. Use the recolor tool with color #E2D0C2 on the skin, and you can just color over the tattoo with this too. I recolored the hair using #403A2E. Refer to sample 1.
Step 3:
If you think the hair and skin looks OK then merge and duplicate again (if you don't, try playing with the color until you get what you want). Now this is going to just depend on the AV that you use what color/s you use to colorize a tattoo but for this particular tutorial, I am going to use red on the heart (#72190A), green on the squiggly thing above the heart (#0A6010), baby blue on the wings (#8CF2F6), and goldish color on the stars (#9E7C06). Refer to sample 2 on exactly what I did to recolor. Not everything has to be colored in 100% to come out awesome. When we add layer effects it will look a lot less ugly! Now in layer palette on the layer that you colored the tattoo in, change that from 'Normal' to 'Soft Light'. At this point it will still look a little weird but at least the colors are a bit more normal now. See sample 3!
Step 4:
Merge and duplicate again! Bring up Lucis and set the mix to 40 and put it on the 4th bubble (see sample 4). Merge and duplicate (if you feel you want to erase skin or smooth out the skin again, go ahead and do that before you do the merge and dup). Now go to Xero Soft Mood XL and use these settings:
Softness 71, Strength 90, Red 37, Green 49, Blue 37, Exposure -47, Contrast -17, Saturation -27. Bring the layer opacity to about 45%.
Now you can do any last touches after this point and add your font, but you're pretty much one. For future avs with tattoos that you may want to use my methods on, pretty much all I do is (sometimes I do not add color to the tattoos at all and just keep them skin color) use Lucis on 40 and sometimes the bubble varies, and when using Soft Mood XL I will just hit Random until I find something that looks good. Sometimes you have to use your imagination and think how a setting might look on a lower opactiy, because that is what it's about.
I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and were able to follow it, if you have any questions please find me on Voodoochat as Abstained! |
